Chatham

Chatham is a town in River Medway area of Kent, in England's South-East.

The name Chatham was recorded in the Domesday book as Ceteham, which is derived from the British ceto and the Old English ham, refering to a forest settlement. A number of archaeological discoveries have been made that illustrate the previous uses of the area, including the remains of a Roman cemetery. The A2 road on which Chatham is situated, is actually an ancient Celtic route, that was later paved by the Romans. It was named Watling Street by the Anglo-Saxons.

By the 16th century, Chatham a harbour for warships, due to its position near to the continent of Europe. It was formally designated a Royal Dockyard by Elizabeth I in 1568. Chatham went on to become one of the countries major shipbuilders. This age-old dockyard that has recently been redeveloped as a business park and tourist attraction, with a number of listed naval buildings remaining as points of historical interest.

Chatham offers a number of visitor attractions,, including, the Elizabethan Upnor Castle, the Old Brook Pumping Station, Fort Amherst Heritage Park & Caverns, the Royal Engineers Museum and the Historic Dockyard. Dickens World in particular is a very popular family attraction that explores the life and works of the author through a variety of amusing and engaging methods complete with actors, including the Great Expectations Boat Ride, a Victorian School, The Haunted House of 1859, a 4D cinema show at Peggotty's Boathouse and an animatronic show.

The town boasts excellent transport links for road and rail and a wealth of retail outlets of both the major high street brands and the smaller independent businesses, that make shopping at Chatham so enjoyable.
