Catterick Garrison

The Catterick Garrison army base, near Catterick Village, is situated in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, in England. This ancient military base is mentioned in Ptolemy's Geographia of circa 150, when the original Roman fort of Cataractonium protected the crossing of the Great North Road on the River Swale.

Catterick is also believed to be the site of the Battle of Catraeth from the poem "Y Gododdin", which was fought between the British Celts and the Anglo-Saxons in circa 598.

Catterick's excellent location once made it a successful rest point and coaching town for travellers of the Great North Road. The "Angel Inn" was once one of the coaching inns where people would refresh themselves and retains much of the character and traditional atmosphere of the period. The Norman Saint Anne's Church is also a dominant, and attractive feature of this pretty rural village.

Popular attractions in the immediate area include Richmond Castle, with it's beautiful riverside walks and cobbled street market, Scollards Hall, which is one of the oldest domestic buildings in England, built in 1080, and of course, The Yorkshire Dales National Park.
