Caterham is a town in the county of Surrey in a picturesque valley that lies in the slope of the North Downs. The East Surrey Museum here tells much of the history of the area that was once an Anglo Saxon settlement; the four exhibition rooms contain permanent exhibitions on geology and fossils, Stone Ages, Bronze and Iron Ages, the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, medieval times and modern history. Caterham-on-the-hill is the site of the original settlement and sits on the ridge above the current town. It was the Victorian age and the coming of the Caterham railway line in 1856 that brought prosperity and increased growth here that led to the development of the Caterham we know today.
Surrounded by glorious countryside, this commuter town offers visitors with a love for the outdoors, the delights of the wonderful North Downs Way; a popular National trail with walkers just at the edge of town. The town itself has a plenty of amenities including, good shopping with independent retailers as well as larger shopping centres, pubs, eateries, historic churches and sites as well as leisure centres and cultural activities.
