Castle Douglas

Castle Douglas is a town in the Southern Upland county of Dumfries and Galloway, in Scotland. It enjoys an enviable location beside the striking Carlingwark Loch. Castle Douglas was a planned town founded by William Douglas in 1792. The town is a popular tourists base from which to explore the historic and beautiful sites of the area, with free parking and a good choice of holiday accommodation available, including a camping and caravan park overlooking the loch and various quality hotels and bed & breakfasts. It offers very good shopping prospects, including a number of independent and unusual shops, and the Castle Douglas Art Gallery. Castle Douglas is also well known as Scotland's Food Town, for its high proportion of food-related shops and for the quality of the local ingredients used in its restaurants.

The area is also popular for its scenic walks, around Carlingwark Loch, along Lover's Walk, and further still — along the various trails, which take in Kelton Hill, Threave Castle, and Threave Gardens, which is a National Trust for Scotland property. Threave Castle is the historic seat of the Black Douglas line of Earls. It is situated on an island in the middle of the River Dee, and can be accessed by the public for an admission charge.
