The unique Canvey Island is a reclaimed island of some seven square miles lying off the south coast of the county of Essex, in the Thames Estuary. Around the start of the 20th century, Canvey Island became the fastest growing seaside resort in Britain with thousands flocking here. The seafront was improved in the 1930’s, with amusements, cinema, cafe and nightclubs and Canvey Island remained popular with tourists up until the 1970’s. The North Sea flood of 1953 devastated the island and saw the loss of 58 islanders, leading to the eventual creation of sea defences. The appropriate motto on Canvey's Coat of Arms 'Ex Mare Dei Gratia' means 'From the sea by the Grace of God'.
Canvey Island is separated from the mainland by a network of creeks, lying below sea level with beaches to the south and a town centre that is behind 14 miles of high sea walls. There are plenty of attractions, eateries and sites of interest here, including; the grade II listed Lobster Smack Public House that dates back to the 17th century. Charles Dickens mentions this pub in Great Expectations.
