Canonbie is a small and scenic village on the River Esk, in the southern Scotland county of Dumfries and Galloway, which features in the Sir Walter Scott poem Marmion. It neighbours the town of Langholm, on the Anglo-Scottish border, and is surrounded by Bruntshiell Moor, Tarras Moss, and the Solway Firth Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The 16th century Gilnockie Tower is only a short walk away, on one of the various scenic routes, while Gilnockie Castle is located just outside of the village, in a strategic location of the river. It was once seat of the Armstrongs — the Lairds of Mangerton — of which Neil Armstrong is a clan member. The castle was in the process of being built by John Armstrong of Gilnockie at the time of his murder by King James V.
