Camelford

The small market town of Camelford in the scenic county of Cornwall is beautifully sited in the River Camel Valley at the edge of Bodmin Moor. There has been a settlement here around the crossing point of the river since at least the early 13th century. The town, like others in this region, is closely associated with the legend of King Arthur; nearby Tintagel is home to the castle where Arthur is said to have been conceived, Slaughterbridge is said to be where he died and Camelford is thought to be ‘Camelot’. Close to Tintagel, on the banks of the River Camel, is a 6th century stone marking the legendary site of Arthur and Mordred’s final battle in 537 that marked the end of the fellowship of the round table.

Camelford would be a fine Camelot even today, with charming little shops, the warmest of welcomes, traditional pubs, ample amenities and the most beautiful scenery in the surrounding areas. Bird watchers, nature lovers, cyclists and those with a passion for outdoor activities come throughout the year to enjoy all that is on offer including; diverse flora, fauna, wildlife and views. The town has been superbly preserved with many of the buildings dating back centuries. Camelford has its own wildlife park that is a popular attraction and for information about this and the many other sites of interest here, the fascinating North Cornwall Museum tells the story of Camelford and the region.
