The town of Camberley is in the county of Surrey in an area once known for its Highwaymen like the infamous William Davies and Claude Duval. There was little early development here as the land was not suitable for agricultural purposes; although a brick tower on top of The Knoll was constructed in the 1750’s by John Norris of Blackwater that may have been used for communications. The remains can still be seen today and are now known as The Obelisk. The history of the town is linked to The Royal Military College that went on to become the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and was built here in 1812. The town grew up around the college and by 1848, the parish church of St. Michael was built and later, the Staff College was established along with the Cambridge Hotel. The coming of the railways in the 19th century brought rapid growth. The Surrey Heath Museum offers a revealing look back into the story of Camberley with displays, exhibitions and talks throughout the year.
Camberley's town centre is a thriving place with The Mall shopping centre, built around the Main Square and plenty of high street and independent shops too. The town offers ample amenities as well as a good choice of pubs, bars, restaurants, eateries, cultural attractions and historic sites. A local landmark in Camberley is the unusual, white elephant near The Meadows roundabout that is constructed of concrete pipes.
