Perfectly placed, the small village of Buttermere is nestled between the lakes Buttermere and Crummock Water within the Lake District, in the picturesque county of Cumbria. High above the village are the summits of Grasmoor to the north and High Stile to the south. The famous author and walker who wrote guidebooks to this area, Alfred Wainwright experienced one of his favourite views from here and the small church of St James has a memorial to him. You can see his favourite mountain 'Haystacks' from the church window.
Buttermere offers visitors ample amenities, pubs and eateries, with further choices in the nearby, more developed towns. The walks around the lakes and hills offer breathtaking scenery that makes this area popular with visitors. Just a short walk from here is the highest waterfall in the Lake District, Scale Force. On the lakes themselves, fishing and boating can be enjoyed but no motor boats are allowed.
