A large market town on the River Trent, Burton upon Trent is also known as Burton-on-Trent or for some, simply Burton; it is found in the county of Staffordshire. Brewing and the success of Burton have gone hand in hand; the brewing industry settled here due to the great quality of the local water. You can find a wealth of information about the history of brewing in Burton at the Bass Museum; it reveals how the industry grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen. One of the by-products of the brewing industry is also put to good use here, as evidenced by the (love it or hate it) Marmite factory that also led to Bovril. At its peak of production and popularity, Burton used to have more than a dozen breweries.
Today Burton draws visitors to enjoy its market, historic sites, picturesque setting, shopping at the Cooper Square Shopping Centre and Guild Street, leisure facilities and choice of eateries, cafes and pubs. Burton can claim more than a strong association with brewery, you will also find Pirelli Tyres here and if you are interested in condiments, you will be delighted to know that the Burton suburb of Branston is where the well-known Branston Pickle was invented.
