Burnham-on-Sea

The pretty seaside town of Burnham-on-Sea in the county of Somerset has grown from a small village in the 18^th century, to become a popular seaside resort. The town’s history is tied to the sea as it was since Roman times. The vast number of shipwrecks that are still visible on the Gore Sands at low tide, provides the explanation for the building of the prominent lighthouses here. The first lighthouse was named the Round Tower and replaced the former warning light that was on top of the 14^th century tower of St. Andrews Church. As the popularity of the resort grew, a stone pier was built in 1858 and a second pier of concrete was started in 1911; this second pier is said to be the shortest pier in Britain.

Today’s visitors to Burnham-on-Sea will understand the reason it became such a popular seaside resort. With a lovely promenade, friendly little shops, the essential fish and chip vendors and all the delights of a traditional seaside holiday, Burnham is a delight.  There are wonderful leisure parks and facilities for sand yachting, golf, bird watching, walking and outdoor activities as well as breathtaking views across to distant Wales along with seven miles of sandy beaches to enjoy too.
