The small market town of Buntingford lies in a valley of the River Rib on the geographically significant London to York road known as Ermine Street, from which the high street gets its name. First mention of the town is in a Knights Templars land document of 1185 that makes reference to ‘Buntas Ford’ with the next historic mention coming in 1253 when Henry III granted a charter to hold a weekly market, that continues to this day, every Monday. Buntingford was a thriving stagecoach stop in the early 1700’s for travellers heading to and from York. Many of the old coaching houses are still here, retaining the character and charm of the town.
Visitors will find ample amenities, plenty of pubs and inns, specialist and high street shops and a choice of eateries here; with some businesses housed in the old coaching inns. Georgian and mediaeval buildings are a delight to explore, with the Buntingford Almshouses, Buntingford Manor House and the Red House being amongst the best examples. Every other year, the town celebrates its heritage at the Buntingford Carnival and in the early autumn, car enthusiasts flock here to enjoy the annual event that is the Buntingford Classic; with classic cars, trucks, tractors and bikes adorning the historic High Street with a vibrant and colourful spectacle.
