The small market town of Bungay in the county of Suffolk is within the scenic Broads National Park in the Waveney Valley. The location of this site that was protected by the River Waveney and marshes, made this an area that attracted settlers from early times. The Romans made Bungay an important military station until they left in the early 5th. In the 12th century, the parish church of St. Mary was built. This church is the site of the legend of ‘Black Shuck' that tells of an event during service here on Sunday, August 4th 1577. The legend tells of a ghostly hound with malevolent flaming eyes that killed two and left another injured before visiting the Cathedral of the Marches at Blythburgh, within an hour of the appearance at Bungay.
Bungay has ample amenities, plenty of individual and specialist shops, a market every Thursday, an abundance of antique shops, fine restaurants, eateries and pubs as well as historic sites and visitor attractions. Places to explore and enjoy include the ruins of Bigod's Castle, the ancient Buttercross, the old Borough well, St. Mary's Church and the oldest building here, Holy Trinity Church.
