The market town of Buckingham is the county of is said to have been founded by ‘Bucca’, the leader of the first Anglo Saxon settlers around the 7th century and was regularly fought over by the Saxons and the Danes from the 7th through to the 11th century. Located in the heart of Buckingham is the fascinating ‘Old Gaol’ that was built in 1748 in the style of a castle. The purpose-built prison is a popular visitor attraction that is now a museum; telling the story of Buckingham and rural life. A number of the original cells still remain and form part of the museum visitor’s experience.
Buckingham offers the visitor a lively and prosperous place to enjoy a a choice of restaurants and pubs, good varied shopping and cultural attractions as well as the bustling market that takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There is also a Farmers' Market held on the first Tuesday of each month.
