Buckfastleigh

The small market town of Buckfastleigh in the attractive county of Devon is found at the edge of the diverse and beautiful Dartmoor National Park. This historic mill town has grown to become a popular tourist destination and far cry from the time its prosperity came from its woollen, corn and paper mills that thrived with the support of the rivers Dart and Mardle and the Dean Burn. The settlement of Buckfastleigh grew during in medieval times and evidences of the original layout of the town is still clear today, although most of the properties were rebuilt by the 17th century.

Buckfastleigh town centre offers visitors a good variety of shops, an open-air swimming pool and a busy weekly farmer's market every Thursday. There are plenty of historic, cultural and visitor attractions in and around Buckfastleigh as well as places to enjoy a meal and a drink; although the ‘Valiant Soldier’ public house is no longer serving anyone. This unusual pub that is now a museum was closed in 1965 and time has stood still ever since. There is so much more to see and do here with Buckfast Abbey to explore as well as South Devon Railway's steam operated branch line to Totnes and the Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary.
