Broughton-in-Furness

The charming, small town of Broughton-in-Furness is in the county of Cumbria at the southern boundary of the picturesque Lake District National Park. The history here dates back to the 11th century and the oldest building in Broughton-in-Furness is thought to be the Saxon St. Mary's Church. With its Georgian market square at its heart, this was once an important market town for the woollen and cattle trades in the area. The Town Hall was formerly the market hall and there remain two slate fish market slabs and old stocks as reminders of the markets of old. With the coming of the railways in the 19th century, came prosperity and growth. Tourism came in the 1950’s with the creation of the National Park

Centred on the lovely market square with its obelisk constructed to mark the Jubilee of King George III in 1810, the town of Broughton-in-Furness is both a historic and beautiful place to spend time. The three-storey merchants’ houses and Town Hall add to the charm and with plenty of restaurants, eateries, pubs, amenities and cultural as well as historic attractions, Broughton is popular with visitors.
