Bristol is a major city in the south west of England, in the spectacular county of Avon. Set in this beautiful landscape of river-worked limestone valleys, the city boasts endless attractions, natural beauty spots and sites of geological significance, such as the Avon Gorge, from which stone was quarried and contributed to the stately architecture of the cityscape. The gorge is also home to several species of endangered plants. Thankfully, the Avon Valley Railway offers rides by steam train through the Avon Valle, which is a fitting and convenient way by which to drink in the fantastic scenery, and is certainly a very enjoyable part of a family day out.
Bristol is England's sixth most populous city, with over a million inhabitants in the wider urban area, making Bristol the region's centre of culture, education and employment, as well as a particularly popular holiday destination. The city also neighbours the spa town of Bath and historic Gloucester. The city also has a small strip of coastline along the Severn Estuary, where Bristol has a commercial port that once played an important role in the development of the city and the region as a whole.
Just a few examples of the many attractions in and around Bristol include: the Bristol Zoo Gardens,
Blue Reef Aquarium, Berkeley Castle, Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park, University of Bristol Botanic Garden, Horseworld, Brunel’s ss Great Britain, and The Bristol Hippodrome.
