The town of Bridgwater in Somerset lies at the edge of the Somerset Levels, in the valley of the River Parrett at the foot of the Quantocks and to the north are the Mendip Hills; a range of limestone hills running between Weston-super-Mare and Frome with its western part designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is popular with visitors who come for the spectacular countryside and the wonderful walks through diverse landscapes. Bridgwater has had a varied and often turbulent history and was long ago defended by its own castle. The history of Bridgwater and the surrounding area can be explored in its museums, historic buildings and sites of interest including; the Somerset Brick and Tile Museum, Castle House and the respected Blake Museum, located in a Grade II listed house in Blake Street that is believed to have been the birthplace of Robert Blake in 1598.
Bridgwater offers ample amenities along with plenty of shops, eateries and pubs and is well placed for visitors wishing to explore this picturesque area. The mediaeval street pattern of Bridgwater’s past still exists today and the town centre is home to a number of attractive historic buildings. Each year Bridgwater hosts the famous Bridgwater Fair and carnival during the last week of September, as it has since 1249.
