Bridge Of Weir

Bridge of Weir is a village in the Scottish council area of Renfrewshire, in the scenic Gryffe Valley. It neighbours Glasgow and Paisley, for which it serves as a dormitory settlement for commuters, although has a good commercial centre of its own and ample amenities.

It is a relatively new village that developed from the small farms that had previously occupied the area, and wasn't recorded as a settlement in its own right until the 18th century. It is named after the forme salmon 'weir' which used to be located nearby on the River Gryffe. The bridge was constructed at Burngill in the 1770s to allow safe passage for traffic between the towns of Greenock and Paisley. The former railway closed on 10 January 1983 and is now part of the Clyde to Forth National Cycle Route (route 75).
