The small rural town of Brandon in the county of Suffolk is surrounded by dense beautiful forest and despite some clues indicating Neolithic, Iron Age, Bronze Age and Roman settlements here, the earliest unearthed evidence of significance was the discovery of the remains of one of the most important Anglo Saxon settlements in Britain. Archaeologists continue to discover information from the items that indicates a community of either royal or monastic status. The town grew around Ferry Street where the road and river traffic stopped to rest. Over time Ferry Street became High Street and was a hive of activity with shops, inns and the houses of wealthy merchants. Rapid development came with the railways in the 19th century, bringing with it an increase in population, prosperity and illumination with the opening of the Gas Works in 1869.
Brandon remains a small, friendly town with a market every Thursday and Saturday, little independent shops, eateries and pubs, historic sites and visitor attractions. Nearby attractions include Brandon Country Park, the Brandon Heritage Centre, Brandon Brewery and the High Lodge Forest Centre.
