The small market town of Brampton in the picturesque Lakeland district of Cumbria is home to the remarkable St. Martin's Church. This Grade I listed building dating from 1874, is the only church designed by the Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb and contains an exceptional set of stained glass windows created by the William Morris studio. Bonnie Prince Charlie passed through Brampton in the mid 18th century during the Jacobite Rising and his brief stay is commemorated by a plaque on the wall of a shoe shop here. During his visit, Price Charlie was visited by the Mayor of Carlisle who had ridden to surrender the city.
Brampton is a pretty place with historic buildings constructed with the local red sandstone and at the heart of the town, is the octagonal Moot Hall, built in 1817. The town has ample shopping and amenities as well as traditional pubs and eateries along its partly cobbled main street. There are visitor attractions and historic sites locally and nearby and of course the activities and views of the beautiful Cumbrian countryside that surround the town; ideal for those looking for outdoor activities and scenic walks.
