Bowness-on-Windermere is a large village in the famous tourist county of Cumbria, in North-West England. It enjoys a beautiful location at the head of Lake Windermere, the largest and most popular of the lakes in the Lake District National Park. It forms one continuous settlement with the town of Windermere, although the two retain separate town centres. They are the two premier destinations of the Lake District, and so have grown together in prosperity and significance. In addition to the well-furnished and traditional high street, and countless family attractions, Bowness is popular for its location on the The Windermere Way, which is a very long but relatively comfortable, scenic walking route that circumambulates the lake.
There are a number of hotels, caravan sites, and youth hostels in the village to accommodate the high volume of holiday makers and pack packers who visit to explore the region, along with a good choice of hotels, self-catering cottages, and bed & breakfasts, which provide a comfortable base from which to enjoy this beautiful region of the country.
Popular attractions in the local area include the Windermere Steamboat Museum, Windermere Lake Cruises (which operate in regular rotation between the major settlements of the lake), Wray Castle, the World of Beatrix Potter, Graythwaite Hall Gardens, and the various locations associated with the life and works of William Wordsworth.
