The port and village of Boscastle in the scenic county Cornwall is home to the 12th century motte-and-bailey fortress, Bottreaux Castle. The motte once supported a strong circular shell keep but the site was an abandoned ruin by 1478; visitors can still see the remaining earthworks of this once important castle that is one of the few that remain in the country. Also rare is the truly unspoilt medieval harbour and surrounding coastline of Boscastle that are been designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty, owned and cared for by the National Trust.
Visitors to Boscastle will find ample amenities and shops, pubs and eateries as well as stunning scenery all around with moorlands, sheltered wooden valleys and the coast. Attractions here and nearby include the fascinating Museum of Witchcraft and the pretty Boscastle pottery shop as well as the lovely old harbour area. The small, protected harbour is still populated with little fishing boats and pleasure craft and the area around the harbour is the oldest part of Boscastle.
