The town of Bordon in the county of Hampshire is also part of Whitehill that adjoins it, with both settlements closely linked. Bordon has been a centre of military importance since 1863 when the War Office purchased 1,600 acres of training land and an army camp opened in 1899; the town is still home today to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Set amidst Woolmer Forest in an area of picturesque heathland that has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Bordon attracts visitors who come to enjoy the wealth of natural beauty, wonderful walks and diverse wildlife, flora and fauna that abound here.
Bordon provides ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor and cultural attractions within the area. A particularly popular attraction is the Deadwater Valley Walk, set in 50 acres of heath and woodland that is easily accessible with wonderful trails and lots of information about the wildlife habitats. Some of the history of this area can be explored at the Bordon Library where artefacts found locally are on display.
