The town of Bootle on Merseyside is on the outskirts of Liverpool and from 1799, provided clear spring water to Liverpool. By the early 19th century, Bootle developed its own identity as a fashionable bathing resort on the sands of the estuary. In the 1840’s though the identity of the town changed as the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway arrived; bringing industrialisation and the building of docks along the riverfront. World War II brought German air raids and Bootle suffered damage to around 90% of its housing. Some magnificent architecture and buildings survived; around the old civic centre of the town, splendid Victorian buildings still exist, like the Town Hall and Municipal Baths.
Bootle today offers visitors lots of choice; for shoppers there are large shopping centres as well as independent shops, for recreation there are leisure centres and recreation grounds and for those looking for entertainment, there is a wide variety of pubs and late night bars as well as restaurants and of course, historic sites.
