Bonnyrigg is a town of around 15,000 people in the Scottish council area of Midlothian, just eight miles to the south-east of the capital city of Edinburgh. Bonnyrigg flourished as a mining village and carpet maker until the 20th century, and most of its architecture dates from this busy era of growth. Bonnyrigg town centre was refurbished in 2006, funded by a £1.5m investment for environmental improvements, with the paving slabs being replaced by natural stone paving in parts of the town centre, and new street lighting and furniture being installed. The town is now a popular tourist base providing a comfortable base from which visitors can explore the sites and attractions of the area such as the Dalhousie Castle.
