The well known town of Bodmin in the scenic county of Cornwall lies in the centre of the county and is home to the historic St. Petroc’s Church. The church is considered the largest parish church in Cornwall and has a holy well which was traditionally used to treat eye diseases. The town is rich with heritage and there are plenty of historic sites for visitors to explore, including the Bodmin Gaol that was notorious for its appalling treatment of prisoners. This grim place that housed 10 of its prisoners in a single cell with no bed and no furnishings was built in 1778 and is now open to the public. The Bodmin Museum is the best place to explore the diverse and fascinating history of the town and region.
Bodmin today offers an excellent choice of eateries and pubs, amenities and shopping as well as visitor, cultural and historic attractions. Lanhydrock House is a popular attraction with beautiful gardens and parkland along the River Fowey, as is the Gregorian mansion, Pencarrow House which is surrounded by 50 acres of woodland. Many visitors though come for the incredible views, walks and varied flora, fauna and wildlife in the surrounding area and the Bodmin Moor Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is an attraction in itself.
