The small town of Blandford Forum in the beautiful county of Dorset lies on the River Stour and was one of the major market towns in the area during the late medieval period. The town developed around the main roads from Salisbury to Dorchester and from Poole to Shaftesbury meet and was strategically important for trade. The attractive Georgian architecture of Blandford Forum is a result of rebuilding after fires in 1713 and 1731 that destroyed the town. The only buildings remaining today from before the fires are the Old House built around 1660 and the Ryves Almshouses from around 1682.
Blandford Forum is renowned as one of the best preserved Georgian market towns in England and offers plenty of interesting shops, a choice of eateries and traditional pubs. The town celebrates every other year with a popular and colourful Georgian Fayre in May that attracts thousands of visitors. If you are visiting Blandford Forum in the first week of May during an even-numbered year, you can enjoy Georgian celebrations, cultural presentations, a fantastic fun fair, amusements, entertainment along the picturesque banks of the Stour.
