Biggleswade, like many of the Bedfordshire towns, is listed in the Domesday Book as a market town, having been granted a charter to hold a market during the reign of King John (1196–1216). The market is still held every Saturday. Briggleswade's heritage is in industry and agriculture as a key transport link and a major producer of vegetables and fresh produce for London. The town is still a major supplier of potatoes and onions to the UK's top supermarkets.
Located on the River Ivel in the South East of England, the town is rich in historical and archaeological interest as the Biggleswade area has been inhabited since approximately 10,000 years BC. The town is also the site of a the White Way — a Roman loop road linking the town to Godmanchester.
An Anglo-Saxon coin bearing the inscription "DE VICO LVNDONIAE" was found on a footpath by the river in Biggleswade in 2001. It was discovered to be one of only eight found from its period and sold at auction for £230,000 but the export of the item was prohibited by the British Government as an item of national importance. It was later bought by the British Museum for £357,832.
Biggleswade's church is dedicated to St. Andrew.
