The small port town of Bideford in the attractive county of Devon, was once a port of great importance. On the estuary of the River Torridge, Bideford is where the 13th century Long Bridge spans the river with its 24 magnificent arches of differing size. In the 16th century, this was Britain's third largest port and closely associated with Sir Walter Raleigh. Bideford is recalled in history for the witch trial in 1682 that led to the hanging for witchcraft of Temperance Lloyd, Mary Trembles and Susannah Edwards; these were the last ever hangings for witchcraft in England.
Bideford is a picturesque town with narrow streets leading down to a tree-lined quay that look out onto a pretty port; still active with fishing vessels and pleasure boats. The town has ample amenities and shops, eateries and pubs and some of the loveliest walks in the area. The walk along the river to Appledore and the Tarka Trail inland to Torrington offer walkers ever changing flora, fauna, wildlife and views.
