Bexley is an area of South East London where the county of Kent begins and lies on the banks of the River Cray. For an area so close to the city of London, Bexley has extensive areas of countryside ranging from ancient woodland to tranquil marshland.
The town has two distinct areas, Old Bexley with its village atmosphere and the newer, suburban area where the main town centre is located. Historic sites and buildings are still in use today in Bexley, including the Grade I listed Hall Place; a country house built in 1537 for a former Lord Mayor of London. Displays here include an introduction to the house's history and exhibits from Bexley's extensive museum collection. Hall Place boasts various period rooms, a panelled Tudor Great Hall overlooked by a minstrel's gallery and award winning formal gardens, spread over 65 hectares of beautiful estate on the banks of the river.
There are ample amenities, shopping facilities, eateries, restaurants and pubs as well as visitor attractions and historic sites in Bexley and the surrounding area. The lush scenery and wonderful outdoor spaces are a pleasure to explore with orienteering, fossil hunting, boating, angling, golf and tennis available as well as lovely walks on several marked footpaths, including part of 40 mile Green Chain Walk. Bexley even has nature at the heart of town with parks and gardens open to the public.
