Beverley is an ancient market town in the county of Northumberland with a historic crest that depicts a beaver; leading to the belief that the old Anglo-Saxon name “Beoferlic” or “Beaver Clearing in the Woods” refers to the now long-gone beavers that used to dwell on and around the River Hull as it passed through here. The town was founded by Saint John of Beverley and following a period of Viking control, became a place of significant religious importance when it passed to the Cerdic dynasty. Later its trading industry was established under the Normans and during the Middle Ages, it was a place of pilgrimage. More recent history witnessed Beverley prosper as a wool-trading town and was once among the richest towns in England.
Beverley is rich in architectural heritage and compressed within a square mile are a wealth of buildings dating from the middle ages through the Georgian and Victorian construction booms, up to the present day. There are important churches, a medieval friary, the Guildhall, coaching inns, alms houses and the houses of rich merchants nestled amongst the amenities, shops, pubs, eateries and even a racecourse here; the Beverley Racecourse continues the tradition of a permanent race track reaching back as far as 1690.
