Betchworth

The village of Betchworth lies in the Mole Valley area of the county of Surrey on the banks of the River Mole. There has been a settlement here since at least 1086 when the Domesday Book notes it as having a church and mill amidst meadow, woodland and herbage. The current parish church of St Michael’s that has stood here for over 900 years is built on the site of the first church. Nearby Betchworth Castle, although a ruin, was once a fortified medieval house overlooking the River Mole. The castle was an earthwork fortress built by Robert Fitz Gilbert in the 11th century. In 1379 it was turned into a stone castle by Sir John Fitzalan and later rebuilt by Sir Thomas Browne in the 15th century. By the 19th century it was without a resident and gradually fell into ruin. Visitors are not encouraged to get too close to the ruin and it is said to be haunted by a black dog that prowls at night.

Betchworth is a picturesque village, set amidst beautiful countryside with picturesque walks and the opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits and witness a variety of flora, fauna and wildlife. The town has shops and amenities as well as historic sites and visitor attractions in the surrounding area.
