Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town in the county of Northumberland that lies at the mouth of the River Tweed. The town is completely encircled by one of Europe's finest-preserved Elizabethan fortifications; offering visitors the opportunity to explore the one and a half mile walk around the walls. With stunning views of the town, the sea and the River Tweed, this is a key attraction in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Another excellent way to discover this town is by joining the ‘The Berwick Lowry Trail’. One of Britain’s best-loved artists, L.S. Lowry, was a frequent visitor here from the mid-1930’s up until his death in 1976. The Berwick Lowry Trail identifies the sites of many of his finest paintings and drawings and allows the visitor to follow in his footsteps.
The geographical location of Berwick has put it at the heart of conflict and the town changed hands between England and Scotland more than 13 times, in over 300 years of border warfare. For those with an interest in the military background of the town, the Berwick Barracks museum houses an excellent collection in Britain's first purpose-built army barracks. The site also houses Berwick's borough museum and is open from Easter to October.
