Berkshire

Berkshire is an historic and romantic county in the South East of England, within commuting distance of London. It is also known as the Royal County of Berkshire as this is the location of the royal residence of Windsor Castle.

This is one of the oldest counties in England, thought to date back as far as 840 AD, with many important battles having been fought here. The River Thames and its valleys, plains and tributaries mark much of the landscape of the county, which is still heavily wooded to the south. The south eastern region of Berkshire is occupied mostly by the valley of the River Kennet, and features the Goring Gap, which is a portion of the Thames Valley that was dramatically altered by the melts of the last Ice Age. This is also the location of the Berkshire Downs, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is known to have been occupied by humans since prehistory.
