Benfleet is a town in the county of Essex that is most remembered in history for the battle that took place here in 894 between the Vikings and the Saxons. The Battle of Benfleet was fought near the end of the Saxon period and the Viking base here was defeated by the army of King Alfred under the command of his son Edward the Elder and his son-in-law Earl Aethelred of Mercia. The Saxons built a church on the grounds where the current St. Mary’s stands, in honour of the victory over the Vikings.
The town of Benfleet is in a lovely setting that offers easy access to pretty countryside and outdoor activities are well catered for locally. The town itself offers plenty for the visitor to enjoy, including independent traders, good shopping, a choice of eateries including excellent restaurants and pubs as well as historic sites and open spaces.
