Belper

The market town of Belper in the county of Derbyshire is nestled in the Derwent Valley with the River Derwent running by. The town experienced rapid growth with the building of water-powered cotton mills in the late 18th century.  At one time there were five mills here although only one of the early mills remains today; it is now home to the Derwent Valley Visitors Centre with excellent exhibits and fascinating items from the past that illustrate the development of the factory community of Belper.

Belper is a picturesque town with a fine stone bridge built in 1795 that crosses the river with its crescent shaped waterfall and scenic walks along its banks. The well laid out River Gardens is a popular visitor attraction amidst this otherwise bustling town centre. There is good shopping here as well as amenities, eateries, pubs and a wide choice of things to see, do and enjoy in the area.
