The historic market town of Bedworth in the county of Warwickshire is mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086 and for many centuries, was a coal mining community. Bedworth lies on the eastern edge of the North Warwickshire coalfield and records show continuous operation here since the 13th century. When the Coventry to Bedworth canal opened in 1769, the town experienced a taste of prosperity as it could at last transport its coal. Later development of the railways in the 19th century increased demand until it peaked in 1939. The last pit in the area to close was nearby Newdigate Colliery in 1982. Alongside its coal production, Bedworth had a thriving silk ribbon industry too. French Protestant families brought the skill to Bedworth in the 18th century, setting up hand-looms in their own homes and a silk ribbon factory survives to this day.
Visitors to Bedworth can still find the weavers’ cottages along Mill Street, amidst and often used as, local shops and businesses. The town centre has good amenities and shopping as well as a great choice of pubs and eateries. A visit to the Parsonage Project Heritage Centre in All Saints Square will take you to the cellar of the magnificent Grade II listed, Nicholas Chamberlaine Almshouses which were built in 1840. Exhibits here tell the tale of the people of Bedworth and the rich history of town life.
