The coastal village of Beckermet in the picturesque county of Cumbria is found amidst the rolling grasslands of Black Beck and Kirk Beck. As the name suggests, the village grew from the place where the two becks meet; although there is also a suggestion that the name could mean ‘hermit's stream’. Beckermet has a church known for its two ancient artefacts; the small St. Bridget’s with its two Saxon cross shafts in the churchyard bearing the date 1103. This Beckermet church is built on a site thought to have been where a 7th century monastic house once stood. There is another church in the village, the listed St. Johns; built in the late 19th century, it incorporates the remains of a former Norman church, with a 13th century doorway.
Beckermet is a tranquil place with just a few amenities, shop and pubs; with a further choice of shopping, dining and attractions in nearby, more developed towns. Visitors come for the incredible range of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in the area, including; walking, cycling, pony-trekking, climbing, and water-sports. There are sites of interest and historic buildings too like the remains of an eight foot tall motted mound where Caernarvon castle once stood, just to the north of the village. It was the original seat of the le Fleming family who left the site around 1250.
