The town of Beckenham in the London Borough of Bromley was settled in the late Bronze Age but only really became populous in the 1800’s when the wealthy came here for the gentle wooded hills, north-flowing rivers and close proximity to London. It was the areas around Monks Orchard and Eden Park that provided the most scenic setting for the new residents during this period. With the coming of the railways in 1857, this once small village amidst tranquil, rural surroundings, became a hive of activity and its population soared along with the development.
Beckenham today retains some of its grand houses and historic buildings, including the 14th century St Georges Church and the 17th century Beckenham Place and Copers Cope House. Beckenham offers plenty for visitors to enjoy; excellent shopping facilities with high street chains and a wide range of independent specialist shops, a wide range of restaurants, bars, historic pubs and wine bars as well as lovely parks, open spaces, cultural attractions and entertainment venues.
