Beccles is a market town in the county of Suffolk that, before the waters receded, was at the edge of the coastal area; the St Michaels Church wall that overlooks the Gillingham marshes was the point past which all that could be seen was water. The town is dominated by the 16th century bell tower of St Michael's church. Built in the Gothic style, it stands 97 ft tall and was sadly damaged by fire in 1586. The tower is deliberately placed at the wrong end of the church as the correct end would have been too close to a large cliff. The Suffolk poet George Crabbe married Sarah Elmy at Beccles church in the 18th century. You can uncover the history of the town at the Beccles Museum in the Grade I listed Leman House
Beccles has a host of places of interest and the quay is a very popular attraction. The traditional market place in the town centre has a large common area where much of the activity here takes place. An excellent shopping area and the splendid markets bring shoppers from far and wide. There are plenty of pubs, eateries and historic attractions to keep everyone happy.
