The town of Bearsden in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland lies near to the vastly developed city of Glasgow, serving as a suburb. Although Bearsden grew during the industrial age and with the coming of the railways in the late 19th century, there has been a settlement here since at least Roman times as evidenced by the Antonine Wall that runs right through the town. The Antonine Wall is a stone and turf fortification built by the Romans marking the furthest and most northerly boundary of the Roman Empire and stretching between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. There are also the remains of a Roman military Bath House in Bearsden that are found just near the town centre.
Bearsden offers all the amenities, shops, eateries and pubs you would expect of a busy, developed town within a few miles of Glasgow city centre. As well as the evidence of early Roman settlement, growth through later periods and the industrial age is clear too in many of the beautiful Victorian houses and other buildings. The opening of the railway in Bearsden led to the most rapid growth and many of the buildings constructed during this time are found in what is now known as ‘Old Bearsden Conservation Area’.
