The small town of Beaminster in the beautiful county of Dorset is in a picturesque location at the head of the lush valley of the River Brit. The Beaminster Museum offers visitors an excellent way to discover the heritage of this town and the surrounding villages. Its collection includes exhibits and displays telling of local families of importance, including the Hine family who formed the Hine Cognac Dynasty as well as a collection of agricultural tools and a working church Turret clock. The museum is housed in the old Congregational Chapel that was built in 1149 and enlarged in 1825. This Grade II listed building is an important architectural feature of Beaminster as it is one of the few building to have survived the three great fires which devastated the town in 1644, 1684 and 1781.
The prosperity that came to Beaminster through the manufacture of wool cloth in the 17th century is evident today with its attractive market house, on stone arched pillars as well as the lovely properties throughout the town. Visitors to Beaminster will find ample shops, amenities, pubs and eateries and if you visit during the summer months, you can enjoy the popular Beaminster Festival of music and art that goes on for nine days and brings people from all over the country.
