Battle is a small town and with a huge role in history that is located in the county of East Sussex. This is the site of the infamous Battle of Hastings in 1066, where William, Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II to become William I. This historically significant battle changed the course of English history. The town of Battle grew up around the Abbey of St. Martin that William the Conqueror had built after the battle, between 1070 and 1094. The high altar is believed to have been placed on the spot where Harold fell. Today the Abbey ruins and the battlefield are cared for by English Heritage and are well worth a visit. The town of Battle is rich with historic buildings; the parish church of St. Mary was built in Norman times and has rare 14th century wall paintings and a Norman font; the Almonry on the High Street was built in 1090 and now houses the Town Council and the Battle Museum of Local History and Battle’s Georgian buildings along the High Street ,add further layers of history, with the cottages and houses near the Abbey dating from around 1700.
Battle today is a friendly, welcoming town that attracts visitors throughout the year. With a great choice of restaurants and shops, cultural attractions, historic sites, the beauty of the East Sussex countryside and coast as well as traditional pubs and an abundance of choice when it comes to outdoor activities, golf courses, fishing, walks and trails, Battle is a delight to visit.
