The historic city of Bath in the county of Somerset has been a city since 1590, although the area has long been inhabited. Evidence shows that the site of the Roman Baths' main spring was treated as a shrine by the Celts. It was in around 60 AD that the temple was constructed, with the bathing complex following over the next 300 years. Bath found prosperity and status as centre for fashionable life in England during the 18th century; a period that saw the building of Bath's Theatre Royal and the architectural developments of Lansdown Crescent, Royal Crescent, The Circus and Pulteney Bridge.
With its natural hot springs, stunning setting, magnificent architecture, great shopping, fabulous restaurants and pubs, historic sites, cultural and visitor attractions, Bath is a major centre for tourism. Bath is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site with a history told in its many museums and attractions including the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Thermae Bath Spa.
