Bassenthwaite Lake is a large lake in England's Lake District National Park, measuring approximately 4 miles long and 0.75 miles wide, with a maximum depth of only 70 feet. Bassenthwaite Lake is unique in the National Park as the only lake to be named as such, with alternatives of "Water", "Mere" and "Tarn" being attributed to the various others. It is fed by, and then drains back into, the River Derwent, while Skiddaw, England's fourth-highest mountain rises impressively above the lake.
The popular tourist town of Keswick lies between the Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water, to the south. The two lakes of the River Derwent are the only remaining habitat of the vendace, an extremely rare and endangered species of fish.
