The large town of Basingstoke in the county of Hampshire has grown from a small market town in Anglo-Saxons times, to become a thriving and successful place of commerce and residence. Basingstoke’s regular Wednesday market continues today as it has since 1214 when its charter was granted. Growth is seen around this time and the cloth industry developed up until the 17th century when brewing became important; the oldest and most successful brewery was established by Thomas and William May in 1750, May's Brewery of Brook Street. The coming of the railways brought further change and prosperity, bringing with it the advent of industrial manufacturing as Basingstoke began to produce agricultural equipment, stationary steam engines and later, traction engines.
Basingstoke offers lots of excellent shops, amenities, a good choice of restaurants, eateries and pubs as well as parks and open spaces, visitor and cultural attractions. The Haymarket Theatre provides entertainment throughout the year and the Milestones Museum of local history is a great place to gain an insight into the lives and work of the people of Basingstoke through the ages.
