The coastal town of Barry in the Welsh county of Glamorgan is a seaside resort that grew from just three small villages and a few scattered farms in the 19th century, to a thriving hub of industry with the building of the docks in the 1890's. This led to a huge increase in the development of the area and the population. The port and railway of Barry became world famous for the export of coal and brought much prosperity until the collapse of the coal industry.
Tourism has replaced the coal mining and dock industries and you will find several beaches, the Barry Island Pleasure Park, panoramic views of the Bristol Channel and with an easy commute to the capital Cardiff, plenty of activities and attractions in the area. Barry hit the headlines in 2010 when Julia Gillard, the 27th Prime Minister of Australia was elected; Barry is her hometown.
