Known as Lake District's premier shopping town with shops catering to a broad range of tastes, Barrow-in-Furness is situated, on the tip of a peninsula in the south of Cumbria in the North East of England.
The town was part of Lancashire until 1974 but is more sensibly classified as Cumbria as the only permanently adjoined land is Cumbrian. Barrow, as it is typically referred to, is an industrial town and a natural harbour, being sheltered from the Irish Sea by the 14 mile long Walney Island. The town is known for it's shipyards and being formerly home to the largest steelworks in the world, with iron mining having been the primary catalyst for the growth of the town.
There is much to see and do in and around the town with two very popular nature reserves present on Walney Island, a Castle on neighbouring Piel Island, horse riding, several golf courses and Furness Abbey, which was once the second richest Cisterian abbey in the country. There is also a new marina complex and plans for a cruise ship terminal. Other points of interest include the Dock Museum, a popular indoor market and Cumbria's largest Cinema. The town has undergone extensive regeneration over the last twenty years and this is ongoing until 2020 with further the development of a watersports centre and cruise ship terminal being among the confirmed projects.
