Barnstaple

The town of Barnstaple in the attractive county of Devon is a perfect blend of well preserved history nuzzling comfortably alongside modernity. The busiest town in the area, Barnstaple was founded because of its geography, being at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw. The town grew in importance and prosperity so that by the time of the Domesday Book in the early 11^th century, Barnstaple had its own mint. The chief reason for its growth in the Middle Ages was because of the excellent port here as well as Barnstaple being a ‘staple port’. A ‘staple’ is a port designated by a government or monarch as a place where specific goods may be exported or imported; Barnstaple was a ‘wool staple’.
